 'Taxation in the U. S.'

  Before submitting its 2006 tax return,   NAAAP Cleveland consulted a former IRS agent. She explained the whole picture of the U.S. taxation system, and instructed members as to how to report individual taxes correctly.

 

 

 

National Leadership Retreat 'Brotherly Love'

 Hosted by Philadelphia Chapter, February 2007

  Ted, representing NAAAP Cleveland, participated in the National 2007 Leadership Retreat. The 60 leaders, serving either role of Chapter/Venture President or National Representative, will assemble to chart the organizational growth and direction of the NAAAP organization, address national objectives and set national priorities for the upcoming year.


 

 'Caregiving for Elders'

   Caring for a family member with dementia or irreversible chronic illness is extremely stressful; contributes to psychiatric and physical illness among caregivers; and increases the risk of caregiver death. Finding better ways to support family caregivers is a major public health challenge. A Korean-American geriatrician, Ted, introduced new caregivers to methods for overcoming barriers . Members discussed the differences of Asian Americans' caregiving compared to that of Caucasians. According to research from Los Angeles and Seattle, Asian American elderly are placed in nursing home facilities less frequently than are Caucasians.

 

  'Environmental Allergies'

  Speaker: Mirie Hosler, MD, October 21, 2006

  

  Mirie, an allergy specialist who practices on the west side of Cleveland, delivered a lecture on environmental allergens in the home, at work, and outdoors. She shared useful information about managing unavoidable allergens with persons who have a history of environmental allergies.

   'Early Korean American Philip Jaisohn, MD 徐載弼 (1864-1951)'

   As the first US citizen, he leaded Korean Independence movement against Japan in US. He published a newspaper, The Independence, to transform Korean people into an informed citizenry.  arranging the first Korean Congress in Philadelphia to inform the American public of Korean situations and to persuade the US government to support the freedom for Koreans.  Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation was built to promote his ideas of humanity through medical, social, and educational services in Philadelphia in 1975. Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission dedicated a historical marker for Dr. Jaisohn, with stating

"American-educated medical doctor who sowed seeds of democracy in Korea, published its first modern newspaper (1896-98), and popularized its written language. The first Korean to earn a Western medical degree and become a U.S. citizen. He worked for Korean independence during the Japanese occupation, 1910-45. Chief Advisor to the U.S. Military Government in Korea, 1947-1948. This was his home for 25 years."

    'Hallyu 韓流': Korean cultural wave

    Introduced Korean mega hit TV drama 'Dea Janggeum 大長今'.

    A real story of touching Asians’ hearts overcoming barriers – from the lowest level to top professional, Sex inequality, and personal competition in late 16th century in Korea (Chosun Dynasty, 朝鮮時代). She was named the Great from the King, and was the first woman doctor in palace.
 

 

 Update 'Immigrant & Nationality law'

 Speaker: Margaret Wong, JD, March 18, 2006

 Hong Kong born, Margaret, updated information on the federal and Ohio governments, and employers for immigrants. In the Cleveland community, she has been solving visa problems for Asian American immigrants for more than 20 years. She was chosen as one of the best lawyers in many consumer magazines.

 

 'Awaken dragon - China impact in world business'

 Speaker: Peter Yang, PhD, Associate Professor, Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Univ., March 18, 2006

   Dr. Yang, who came to the U.S. after the Tiananmen Massacre in 1989, presented 'growing market of China' from the academic and realistic view. He predicted that China will be a collateral economic market to the U.S. and E.U. with strength of well-educated manpower and advanced technology; the presentation included an I.T. section.
